SERVICE PROGRAM
During His ministry, Jesus exhorted His disciples to obey the 10 Commandments that had been handed down through Moses many centuries before. But at the Last Supper, our Lord introduced a new command, one which He made binding on all of us: “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34).
At Bishop Guilfoyle, we recognize that an essential part of Christian discipleship is service— putting the love of Christ into action on behalf of others. It is not simply an opportunity to help others or build up the community, but a training program for the young disciples we are hoping to form.
As a result, a minimum of 25 hours for each academic year is required for each student at Bishop Guilfoyle. It is necessary to complete these hours to fulfill graduation requirements.
Requirements
The requirements for the service program are as follows:
· Service hours must be the result of students FREELY giving time and talent (not accepting money).
· Students must submit a completed and signed Bishop Guilfoyle Service Hour form (click to enlarge the document window above if you need to print a copy) for each group or facility where the service was performed.
· Participation in church-related ministries (altar serving, lecturing, etc.) does count toward service hours.
All service hours must be submitted prior to March 19th (the Feast of St. Joseph) each school year. Failure to do so will result in a state of ineligibility to participate in extracurricular activities.
Having Trouble?
There are many opportunities for service throughout the range of our school community. If you are having trouble finding such opportunities, don’ t wait! Contact Mr. Sutton, our campus minister, ASAP, by calling him at school during the school year; in person during regular school hours during the school year; or at [email protected]. We are ready and willing to help!
THE POPE FRANCIS CHALLENGE
The Pope Francis Challenge is an annual pre-Thanksgiving collection of 50 items for the poor & needy, donated through Catholic Charities & the St. Vincent de Paul society (among others). Details on the program are sent home to parents as well as given as a handout to all BG students at the first all-school Mass (early September).
